After a year-long review, the Department of Justice said Thursday that the Portland Police Bureau violated the U.S. Constitution by engaging in a “pattern or practice of excessive force against people with mental illness.”
The family of James Chasse held a press conference Monday to reveal what they say is evidence that Portland Police lied and covered-up evidence in the investigation into Chasse's death.
Many people, including city commissioners, said they hope the lessons learned from the death of James Chasse Jr. will be a lesson on how to keep it from happening again.
According to Chief Reese, the occupant of the car was combative and produced a handgun and began firing at officers, striking one, Christopher Burley, with two gunshots. Officers returned fire, killing the gunman, who has not yet been identified.
