It has been nearly four years since three men lost their lives on Mount Hood.

Shivering, weak and injured in a snow cave, Kelly James managed to reach his wife on his cell phone. "You've got to be really strong," she told him. The conversation - six minutes, 42 seconds long - was their last.

Rescue teams headed up the flanks of treacherous Mount Hood on Monday to search for three climbers reported missing in heavy snow, but they were ordered off the mountain when conditions became too dangerous.

Three climbers are believed to be spending their fifth night on Mt. Hood after they went missing while scaling the mountain last week. Rescue teams tried to find them Monday but were ordered to turn back when conditions became too treacherous.

Searchers are still on the mountain despite near white-out conditions on the upper reaches of Mount Hood. Colder weather is expected to move in Tuesday. Helicopters are unable to join the search due to the poor conditions.

Searchers looking for three men missing on Mount Hood were called down because of blizzard-like conditions, high winds and ice and blowing snow. They plan to regroup, wait for a break in the weather and go back.

A 55-year-old Eugene oncologist descending from the summit of Mount Hood died after a rock fell from the snow and knocked him a thousand feet downhill, authorities said. Efforts to recover his body had to be halted around noon due to dangerous conditions.

"I told him [Dwight Hall] this was Oregon and he didn't have to do that," Sheriff Joe Wampler of Hood River said. "But he said, 'that's not me.' He wanted to make sure there is money for the next search... he was insistent."

About 80 searchers and support staff will be looking for Brian Hall, 37, of Dallas, Texas, and Jerry "Nikko" Cooke, 36, of New York City, who vanished in early December after reaching the summit.

Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler says the search will concentrate on the 8,000-9,000-foot level of the north side below the difficult area where Brian Hall and Jerry "Nikko" Cooke apparently fell.

On Saturday, searchers found some of the gear the trio had stashed on their way up the mountain in December. It was only a few hundred feet above where Kelly James, Brian Hall and Jerry Cooke started their climb.

Climbers Kelly James, Brian Hall, and Jerry Coke died in November on Mount Hood during a snow storm. Search and rescue teams found James’ body in a snow cave, but were unable to locate the other two men's bodies.

About 100 searchers plan to head up to Mount Hood to look for the remains of two climbers who lost their lives on the mountain last winter.

A long line of police vehicles moved slowly through the Salem area and residents stood along streets as the procession passed to honor Deputy Kelly Fredinburg, 33, who was killed in a crash near Gervais.
